OBJECTIFIED 2

After I watch the film “OBJECTIFIED” in class last week, I feel design is a universal problem; the reason I said this is because what the film said does match with Nathan Shedroff’s speech.

In the film “OBJECTIFIED”, it talks about Material that come from and form that connected to the material. As I think we could never design nature, but I think most of our design is destroying our nature. The reason I said this is because I think designer should not only focus on their design, they should pay more attention on the material that they use on design. For example, bottle water, I think this is a good design, because this design, we could drink anywhere we want and anytime we want. However, the material the designer use “plastic” is contaminated our world. This is what Nathan Shedroff said, a bad design is a waste, but in this case, a bad design could be also a pollutant.

Suddenly, I feel so ironic, because in the film, they also said, Design is mass production, good design is something everybody wants and good design last long. I guess in the water bottle case, it should be a good design. Because water is everybody want and need every day, and nothing is going to last longer than a plastic bottle.

OBJECTIFIED

That day we saw the film call “OBJECTIFIED” in class, the film is all talking about idea of design and resource been use by designer. There is Gary Hustwit in the film; he said he is interest at how is an idea come out from a designer and how are these object affect us. I agree with what he thinks, our life is not perfect, object in our life could let the user feel painful, just like the potato peeler show in the film, a bad design of a potato peeler could let the user hurt his hand or even bleeding. In the film show a design of a handle of the potato peeler, I think because need so there is design. The designer of the modern potato peeler came out an idea by using a bike handle to create a handy handle. The rubber handle on the modern potato peeler, for instance, was invented to make it easier to use for people with arthritis.

In the film they said 78% of our world is uncomfortable; there is over million chairs that people designed but most of them make the person sit on them feels uncomfortable. But I think because over million uncomfortable chairs so there will be a comfortable chair. That is why a good design is as little design as possible.

Nathan Shedroff speech

This week Nathan Shedroff came to our class to talk about Design is the Problem. Nathan Shedroff is the chair of CCA's groundbreaking MBA in Design Strategy. Nathan was talking a story of Nokia phone design; he said, there is once that Nokia company designed a cell-phone that has a old faction dial system that has to put our figure in the hole and roll around, which is been call as a old rotary phone. At the beginning, lots people went to buy it, but after half of an hour, they all brought the phone back to store and said they can’t use it. This story he told is about resource use and waste. As what Nathan Shedroff said, when a product came out and did not get buy, this is resource waste, this is not only about waste of the product itself, but also everything behind it.
Let’s use the Nokia cell phone as an example, when the Nokia company produce a line of product, we call it J phone, when people returned all J phone they brought, that means that J phone has no more market value. Then Nokia is losing money on designing them, also the human capital that use on designing the phone; besides the designing, the material that using to create the phone, the labor use to buy the material, the factor line, the power using to run the machine is all wasted. Therefore, a simple design is better than a bad design, because a bad design not only is a waste also is a burden for environment .

color thory 2

This week I read the charter 13 of the book “Design Basic” which wrote by Davis A. Lauer. In charter 13, it’s basically talking about Color theory; the section call “Light and color perception” catch my mind, in this section, the author is talking about how does people only look at a color could know what subject it is. For example green color on the ground then it must be grass. In the book it said “our mind insists that the grass is green despite the visual evidence to the contrary” and in psychology it calls “color constancy”.
In the book there are also two pictures that show the color constancy, these two pictures are draw by Claude Monet, one call poplar on Epte, the other one call poplar. All subjects on those two pictures are the same, sky, trees and lake, the only different is the trees’ color. On the second picture “poplar”, all trees are yellow, also leaves are yellow. After we compare those two photos, we can notice that the season of the view is different. On the second photo, the season is autumn and the first one is on spring season. How could we bee so sure, because we know that during season all trees will become yellow. Now, here is the power of color.

color thory 1

In the book “Design Basic “, there is one more section interest me in charter 13. That section is call afterimage, after image is talking about “stare at an area if intense color for a minute or so. And then glance away at a white piece of paper or well. Suddenly an area of complementary color will seem to appear.” This term is describes that use a different pattern with different color by organized the color of the shape or pattern. By stand back and look at the picture after organized you could see a photo or object. But when we look close the photo will turn back to pattern.
In page 264, there is a lady photo is from by thousands cube of pattern. The picture is call chunk close, when we look far from the picture, we could see lineament of the lady, but when we look close, we could see all small cube with circle shape in there, most of these cube has different color. The artiest have to organize the color cube in order to create the lady’s face.
This kind of photo could only do by hand; there no software could do it at this point. We could also see the afterimage photo in Disney land

bike safe

Since we were talking about bike safe during class, I would like to write some idea from me about bike safe. In Davis, most of student would have a bike; but in nowadays, because quantity of car is increasing every day, there is less space for bike to run on street. Bike rider is having more dangerous when they riding a bike, they not just have to look out for cars that pass by them, when they riding on the small line, they also have to look out for other bike rider.
Therefore, we have to design a way to let all bike riders feel safe when they ride on road. I feel that when I am riding a bike, cars that pass by me are too close. This may cause car hit on a bike rider; it could also cause accident with other car by try to avoid hit on the bike rider, there for I feel that we should increase the distant from the bike link with the car link. Also good bike rider could also decrease the accident happens, so we should also give each bike a license plate, when they cross the red light the road camera could take picture of it and give the rider a penalties ticket, if they don’t pay the fine by time, there should be a system on the bike automatically lock down the bike.

Happy slip

Happyslip was at our Des 1 class during Wed. during the class, she explain to us how did she found out the idea about the video she made call “freak out”, as she said she is thinking to create a video that shows her family member’s reaction when there is some body break into her house. she also talk about how did she use her video become a way of social media; For example ,in the “freak out” happyslip point out that the insurance advertising do not show a normal person’s reaction.
Happyslip has some videos on her blog, but most of them are still using the “family member’s reaction” to show her family member’s point of view. According to what Happyslip said, each video she has, took lot’s time to create, also with the team behind her to help her do some of those computer effects. I like the way Christine Gambito using video she make as a social media to wake up other people’s social sense, like the insurance advertising that been point out in her “freak out” video, also she use her video to do social interaction, those feedback from the viewer, she like to see the negative feedback more than the positive ones, because she could be making better video after she “digest” those negative feedbacks. Now here is the cycle of social media.

what an Idea

ideas of design which could make life simple and easy.
